Bina Goenka x Gemfields x Walk for Giants
Mumbai-based high jewellery designer Bina Goenka marries traditional Indian opulence with contemporary style.
Her Elephant Earrings pay homage to the most beloved of wild animals. Elephants are as revered in Indian Hindu mythology as they are on the plains of Africa.
Made from diamonds, emeralds, rubies, tanzanite and 18k gold, the delicate Elephant Earrings are crafted to resemble elephant heads – a poignant depiction of these gentle giants. The large head signifies wisdom and understanding, while the wide, open ears emphasise the elephant’s ability to hear everything. The trunk symbolises peace and prosperity, if turned left, and freedom and power when turned to the right. They were designed specifically for Space for Giants, a charity dedicated to protecting Africa’s wildlife, using Gemfields’ responsibly sourced Mozambican rubies and Zambian emeralds.
The equally beautiful Palm Earrings are made from white diamonds and Zambian emeralds from Gemfields. While the Elephant Earrings are intended to represent the giants themselves, the Palm Earrings represent the Walk for Giants, the green of the emeralds signifying the landscapes – the luscious, abundant forests – in which the elephants have long made their home. Both the elephant tusks and the earth itself, which the emeralds represent, are under threat from poachers and developers, respectively, so the earrings make a political statement, as well as looking beautiful.
“The importance of seeing the two pieces together is that conservation requires a holistic approach, where the animals are protected within the lands that they occupy. Walk for Giants is a step towards drawing the right attention towards conserving these lands and putting an end to poaching,” says Bina Goenka. She founded her brand on the principle of sustainability, in terms of craftsmanship (having pieces created by hand, rather than by a machine) and in sourcing (working with responsible suppliers, like Gemfields, who give back to their local communities).
