Conservation
Overview
As an Africa-focused mining company, we are proud to partner with local conservation organisations that are dedicated to protecting Africa’s animals and working with communities to prevent illegal poaching.
Gemfields, Kagem, MRM and Fabergé have long been involved in fundraising initiatives for conservation causes. From “Emeralds for Elephants” for the World Land Trust in London (2010) and Mumbai (2011), to the Fabergé Big Egg Hunts for the late Mark Shand’s Elephant Family charity in London (2012) and New York (2014), aiding conservation remains a key focus for the Gemfields Group.
More recently, we sponsored and co-launched “Walk for Giants” (2020), a fundraising and awareness-building campaign for African wildlife conservation, in partnership with international conservation charity Space for Giants.
Our Conservation Projects
Our partners support key activities related to conservation and community work in national parks in Zambia and Mozambique.
We work with:
- North Luangwa Conservation Programme (Zambia) – In December 2021, we donated a portion of sales from Chipembele – its largest emerald to date – as well as the full sales price on a series of NFTs called the Chipembele Crash.
- Quirimbas National Park (Mozambique) – We hold a three-year philanthropic partnership, in which we donate funds each year. Following our support throughout 2018 – 2020, we have subsequently renewed for 2021 – 2023.
In addition, we support The Luwire Wildlife Conservancy which is based in the Niassa Reserve in Mozambique.
