Namanhumbir Community Radio Station reopens
The Namanhumbir Community Radio Station, built and equipped by MRM, has resumed broadcasting following a period of interruption caused by acts of vandalism during political demonstrations in December 2024.
Since its inauguration in April 2022, the 94.1 FM station – the first and only radio signal in Namanhumbir – has established itself as the most far-reaching community communication platform in the area, providing content on education, health, agriculture, entrepreneurship, culture and citizenship.
The station also promotes initiatives that contribute to socio-economic development and improved quality of life for local communities, strengthening inclusion, dialogue and social cohesion within a 70-kilometre radius.
Nine people are currently employed by the station, which has been managed by The Mozambican Community Education Association (“AMEC”), a civil society organisation based in Montepuez, since its launch.
The radio station also enables MRM to raise awareness of and educate communities about the dangers of illegal mining, seeking to discourage behaviours that place both individuals and others at risk, while promoting safer and more sustainable livelihoods.
