On 26 May 2025, MRM was pleased to welcome Aníbal Mbalango, the new President of Mozambique’s Tax Authority, reinforcing the mine’s strategic importance to national revenue and community development.

The newly appointed President of Mozambique’s Tax Authority chose to visit Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) to strengthen engagement between the two parties, and address ongoing industry challenges such as delayed VAT reimbursements. The MRM team presented the mine’s positive social impact and its role as a consistent top taxpayer.

Mr Mbalango acknowledged these contributions and affirmed: “We are working on tax reforms to ensure greater flexibility in our services. Everyone must pay taxes—and everyone must receive what is owed to them.”

MRM was recognised as Cabo Delgado’s top taxpayer from 2014 to 2019, as well as 2022 and 2023. The company was also recognised in 2021 as one of the top taxpayers, whilst in 2020 and 2024 no awards were announced.  To date, MRM has contributed 24% of its revenue (not profits) to the government through corporate income tax and royalties. The new Tax Authority head’s visit underscores MRM’s commitment to responsible mining and its value as a strategic economic partner for Mozambique.
