MRM Rises to Second Place for Transparency in Mozambique’s Extractive Sector
MRM has been ranked second in Mozambique’s Extractive Sector Transparency Index, recognising strong progress in promoting accountability and responsible practices in the mining industry.
On 24 October 2025, MRM was recognised as the second most transparent extractive company in Mozambique, marking a major milestone in advancing accountability and good governance in the nation’s mining sector.
MRM has been ranked second in the Extractive Sector Transparency Index (ITSE), reaffirming its position as one of Mozambique’s most transparent mining companies. Organised by the Centre for Public Integrity (CIP), the assessment highlighted MRM’s balanced and robust performance across all measured indicators, proving that transparent operations are achievable in the often-complex gemstone sector.
The 2025 Index placed SASOL Petroleum Temane first with 73.68%, followed closely by MRM at 73.24%, and Twigg Exploration & Mining in third with 62.40%. The Index evaluates 45 ESG-F and sustainability criteria, yet 18 of the 32 assessed companies scored 0.00%, highlighting the widespread lack of transparency within the sector.
Receiving the award on behalf of the mine, Head of Corporate Affairs, Raime Raimundo, said: “MRM and Gemfields have been proactively promoting transparency in the mining sector and inviting other companies to take on the same commitment. This recognition indicates that these efforts are truly paying off.”
MRM has improved by 33.24 percentage points since 2020, rising from seventh to second place, and is recognised by regulators (who are one of several stakeholders providing assessment) as the most transparent mining company in Mozambique this year.
MRM continues to drive collective action for better transparency, including through its Mining Industry Roundtable initiative and by championing the G-Factor for Natural Resources, which measures the percentage of revenue shared with host governments.
